But I know I spent a long time existing, and now I intend to live.
When was the last time you spent hours outdoors with your kids, or just alone? If you don’t have a backyard, when was the last time you took a long walk in the park?
If you are like me, the answer is ages ago. That’s right! The last time I spent more than a few minutes in our backyard was ages ago. And it’s right there!! Behind our house…green grass, open sky, fresh air and everything.
Sad, isn’t it?
I am sure many of you are guilty of not being outdoors more, especially if you are a working mom with kids and more than enough to do daily.
My daily schedule goes somewhat like this:
– Wake up, get ready for work.
– Office work 5-1:30p.
– Get breakfast ready for everyone.
– Prepare lunch for everyone.
– Get kids brush, ready, get Arya ready for school.
– Drop Arya to school during my break.
– Finish office work and do chores around the house.
– Pick Arya from school.
– Kids – feed them, bath, books, put to bed.
– Finish chores around the house, prepare stuff for the next day.
– Breastfeeding Aavya so insert that every 1-2 hours throughout the day.
Yep! Now, where do I insert “mom’s backyard fun” in between all the chores? I might be exaggerating but between entertaining the kids, housework, office work, and all the other stuff that has to be done, I often forget to step out of the house for fresh air.
Being quarantined for COVID-19 may be the most difficult change for many families. But honestly, it was a good change of pace for mine. Why? You see, I already work from home, so I don’t have to worry about adjusting to being home with kids and getting things done. And, Arya has preschool only for a few hours daily, so I also have them around me pretty much all day/night. The only thing that has changed is not leaving the house to go drop/pick her up from school because school is closed. I also do errands or just hang out at Target or something after picking her up so that is also not happening. Other than that, everything else remains the same.
Yesterday, after a long time, I spent 4 hours in our backyard. 4 hours guys? Can you believe it? 😊 I took the girls out to play right after they had lunch, and just stayed there with them until it was time for dinner.
We had so much fun and I kept wondering why I didn’t do this more often. Amid our routine-filled life we often forget to enjoy the simple pleasures available to us. We say that we want to slow down and enjoy the moment but it’s not always possible. Slower days is like a luxury to us.
But now, whatever be the reason, we have been given a chance to put breaks in our lives. We have been given a chance to take it easy for a while and to stay close with our families and just be. Everyone is forced to skip school, work, ballet or swim or soccer lessons. We are forced to avoid the traffic, and crowded malls. We are forced to stay home instead of going out shopping [on purpose or aimlessly].
So, let’s embrace it. Embrace these slower times and just smell the rose probably growing in your own backyard! Don’t take it for granted. These slower days won’t last. We will fight #covid19 and things will get better. Slower days will again become our fast, routine filled lives. But until it does, relax, stay home and eat ice-cream in the sun!
If you need some activity ideas for your little ones, here is a blog I wrote about summer activities for preschoolers. I think the kids and I checked off a few from this list today [Bubbles, playing with water, backyard free play catching butterflies, digging in the dirt, watering the garden, playing ball, eating ice cream, and laying on the grass.
What are some of your favorite backyard activities you enjoy with your family?
