Remember the luscious and long hair you enjoyed during pregnancy? Well it came with an expiration date.
Yep, it’s TRUE.
Most women experience major hair-loss several months after having their baby!
Because the long hours of labor, the pain, the sleepless lifestyle and the stress was not enough…!
Postpartum hair-loss and regrowth occurs usually around 6-12 months, but it could start earlier. With both my girls, I experienced hair loss starting around 3 months and it went on for what seemed like forever (my hair just began falling as I am almost 3 months postpartum).
I felt so miserable when my hair began to fall after I had our first baby.
Chunks of hair in the bath-tub, pillow, and the comb freaked me out so bad that I hated at the thought of washing or combing my hair.
Causes of Postpartum Hair-loss
The reason for this hair loss postpartum are 2 of our female hormone friends – estrogen and progesterone.
These two hormones are in abundance during pregnancy thus promoting healthy hair, nails, etc.
But after the baby is born, estrogen and progesterone levels drop to normalize thus causing hair loss.
Additional causes are stress, changes in vitamins and minerals in the body such as iron and Vitamin B12 levels, and weight-loss even. These are all common “problems” women face postpartum, therefore, they can all be contributors to postpartum hair-loss.
Someone once told me, “the hair that is ready and has to fall will fall out” and there was nothing I could do to stop that.
On the bright side, this is not a permanent loss and there are several things you can do to enhance hair regrowth.
How to Get Your Hair Back?
With my first pregnancy, I was super depressed with all the hair-loss.
It came to a point where I had my husband chop it off right in the middle of a shower, as I sobbed hysterically.
It was my first time experiencing something like this, and I knew I was ready for sleepless nights and round-the-clock mom life, but I was not at all prepared for hair-loss.
When I finally got my mind wrapped around this fact, I tried everything and anything to get my hair back.
These suggestions are helpful in hair-regrowth; however, it does take time and it all depends on our body, and how we respond to these “treatments”.
It is important to continue with your vitamins postpartum. Not only for the baby if you are breastfeeding, but for your body to heal faster and for hair-growth. I kept on with my Prenatals because all the vitamins/minerals are in high amounts in the prenatal tablets. I also added Fish Oil tablet to my diet, and Vitamin D capsules as per my doctor’s orders.
As a mom of 2 kiddos under 5, it is super difficult to find time to eat healthy.
I usually grab whatever is there and move on to doing laundry, feeding the baby, playing with the oldest, or making food for the family.
However, to start your hair regrowth process, eating a healthy, protein filled diet is very imperative. Some food choices that promote hair growth are eggs, fish, spinach, seeds, avocado, and berries.
Avoid coffee if possible as caffeine leads to iron deficiency which enhances hair loss.
If you are breastfeeding, please ensure that the food you eat are safe for the baby, especially eggs, milk, etc.

I am a big fan of coconut oil and regardless of hair loss or growth issues, I often give myself a scalp massage using coconut oil. I also use it on both my kids, from head to toe.
One of my favorite hair growth oil concoctions are as follows:
Coconut oil + Rosemary essential oil
Apart from having antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidants, rosemary essential oil is also a stimulant and works well for hair growth.
Mix together 1 cup of coconut oil with about 20 drops of rosemary essential oil. Shake it well and keep it in a tight bottle. Massage it on your scalp either during the day (if you are home) or before going to bed. Wrap your hair with a towel or t-shirt to avoid staining your pillows.
This combination helped me immensely with my last pregnancy and postpartum hair-loss.
Since my hair just began falling again this time around, I already have this mixture ready for use. My mom usually massages it on my hair and scalp and I look like a wet poodle afterwards, but whatever! 😊
P.S. There are other types of oils that you might prefer for your hair – ones you have used before. Please feel free to replace coconut oil with avocado, almond, or whatever you like!
Keep Your Hair Clean
This was a difficult thing for me last time around. As I mentioned, I was afraid to shower because I could not stand seeing my hair go down the drain, literally!
But it is critical to continue shampooing your hair to aid in healthy hair-regrowth.
Washing your hair does not increase the amount of hair lost; however, do wash it gently not vigorously and use a gentler hair brush/comb.
Avoid heat or experimenting with products
This is one totally your call!
Applying various growth or other new products, or even styling it with heat may not be advisable just yet.
You will need to be patient with the hair re-growth process because it is time consuming. I know my hair takes very long to grow and in the mean time, I get stuck with strands of baby hair all over my head, which I hate!

I would like to add that you should try to remain calm and patient with yourself and your hair! 🙂 I know this is easier said than done. But just know that postpartum hair-loss only means that you did something really magical and beautiful – you had a baby – and this is just a badge for your mom wall of fame!
