I grew up in a Fiji-Indian home, eating Indian home-cooked meals every single day.
For about 17 years of my life, I barely ate out; no restaurants, fast food, or take-outs of any kind. We cooked all our meals at home – breakfast, lunch parceled from home, and dinner again at home with our family.
I learned how to cook roti (Indian tortilla) when I was 6 years old. My mother taught me how to cook many Fiji- Indian dishes growing up, and I was a pro at making rotis, some curries, and even sweet dishes before I became a teenager.
It was tradition!
Today I am a mother of 2 girls. I hope that one day I will get to teach them how to cook. My oldest, Arya, already loves rolling tortillas and helps her grandmother and myself whenever we make them. 😊
Until I get to teach my daughters how to cook Indian food, my goal is to make sure they prefer and eat Indian dishes! 😊
Indian food is known for its bold flavor, color, and spiciness.
There are some differences between Indian cuisine from India and dishes cooked in Fiji, such as level of spices, variety of spices used, and their names. Overall, the difference isn’t much. And I will be linking dishes I grew up eating and making down below.
Cooking or even ordering Indian foods for kids can be tricky. However, there are several dishes that are neutral and mild tasting, and others that look fun that the kids will not hesitate to try.
