30 Doable New Year’s Resolutions That You Won’t HATE!5 min read

New Year’s resolutions are a great way to initiate positive changes into your life. The beginning of a New Year is filed with PROMISE and ENERGY, and they may be just the boost you need to make a change.

About 40% of the Americans make New Year resolutions each year. Whether it’s getting to the gym, or creating a morning routine, or start saving money, New Year always seems like the right time to hit a reset button in our lives and CREATE that NEW YOU!

Despite the good intentions, statistics show that only about 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions.             


Well, there are several reasons why we fail at them?

  1. Our goals aren’t clear and easy to track.
  2. We feel discouraged or lack motivation (within or in your environment).
  3. Not true to ourselves when you set the goals.
  4. Not truly ready for a change.
  5. We are unrealistic or we underestimate the time and effort it will take to achieve the resolutions.

And the list could go on…!

My husband and I make a few New Year’s resolutions every year, but we all know that setting them is easier than the execution. Sometimes we get a few things checked off but other times, by spring time every excuse in the book gets in the way of our New Year’s resolution.

So, this time we have decided to take a step back and analyze our goals for next year; for us and our girls.

AND, we are going to start small! For example, hitting the gym WILL NOT be on the list :); walking our girls to the park every Saturday will be!

Well, here are some doable AND specific ideas to get you thinking about your New Year’s resolutions.

De-clutter your house but start small – declutter the kids’ closet or your own. Or better yet, the laundry room. But first, read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

Cook at home more – try these easy recipes.

Learn how to perfect your Instagram pictures, and about filters and themes.

If you love coffee, GET a Keurig! It is SO WORTH IT!!

Put a mason jar in your room for loose change/singles that keep tumbling out of your purse or jeans.

Get rid of toxic people in your life/workplace/circle.

Self-care – make a hair appointment for every 6-8 weeks and KEEP IT!

Compliment your spouse/partner daily!

Pray/mediate – start with once a week and increase the frequency or duration if you feel like it.

Start wishing friends/family Happy Birthday or better yet, buy a pack of birthday/thank-you card and send snail mails. Trust me, they will love it! (How would you like to get a card instead of bills in the mail all the time?!!)

Try journaling – if it’s not your thing, drop it! But it really is therapeutic. You can dump your mind on paper and sleep like a baby.

Want to become healthy? Start healthier choices- coffee without creamer, use almond/soy milk, carry a water bottle with you everywhere, and skip that afternoon jolt for green tea.

Up the gratitude bar – appreciate YOUR LIFE and the people in it!

Get a calendar from the dollar store for EVERYTHING! (unless you prefer a digital planner, your pick!). If you have a task that you want to track, seeing Xs on completed days is a real motivator.

Get a plant for your house. House plants help you breathe easier, increase humidity, purifies the air as well as enhances concentration. That’s NEW RIGHT? 

Learn to see the positive in every situation. This is a tough one I know, because I can be anxious, paranoid, and negative. But I am taking baby steps to stay calm and look at the bright side of things.

Organize your life – start small, for example, the storage space below the bathroom sink. Then move on to other spaces in the house!

Donate or throw unused items after you organize & declutter.

Do a technology detox once a month (start small and move it to a weekly thing if you like!).

Sign up for yoga, or a dance class.

Avoid cell phones during dinner with family/friends, and make more eye contact to be IN THE MOMENT! 

Take your kids to the park every weekend (if you can) or visit the arboretum to soak up some Vitamin D.

Celebrate a festival/holiday every month – trust me there are way too many things going on each month. Pick a few and genuinely have fun celebrating it, especially if you have kiddos who will love the tradition.

Listen to podcasts.

Start a blog and if you do, read this blog for all kinds of cool, crazy, and super informative tips/podcasts.

Create a routine of some kind – morning, night, weekend reading, etc.

Do safety checks monthly in your house – check alarm batteries, locks, windows, garage doors, etc.

Be kind and patient with yourself – if you feel frustrated or are overwhelmed, get up, go outside, and just breath. You are just 1 person, and you can’t do it all or have it all. So, go easy on yourself!



New Years is the time to unfold new pages and start a new chapter in your life. And New Year’s resolutions help make things interesting while you make the desired changes to your life for the best!

It is not essential that you pick a big goal; start with something small, start with something fun, and something specific. And it will pave your path to bigger goals in your life!
